Meet the Small Businesses Behind W.E. Shop Local Show

Monday, October 01, 2018

It’s that time of year again for the WindsorEssex Small Business Centre’s signature annual vendor show in celebration of Small Business Month in Canada. For 2018, W.E. Shop Local Show will focus on providing shoppers with access to a diverse array of Windsor-Essex products and services. Love local, shop local is what it’s all about!

The Shop Local Show will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Fogolar Furlan Club of Windsor. This show is a free public event that will showcase over 50 local independent small business products and services including food and drink, retail products, such as well as fashion, beauty, wellness, art, homewares and consumer services. This evening event includes live demonstrations, a cash bar and a networking lounge.
Below is just a sample of the featured vendors that will be participating in the Shop Local Show this year.

Dressed by an Olive
With two locations in Tecumseh and Windsor, Dressed by an Olive is led by a husband and wife team who are dedicated to changing the way people understand and consume extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegars. Daniel and Merja Avena have created a retail environment where customers can learn the facts about their high-quality products as well as taste the difference. Discover their fresh bold taste experience and visit their booth at the Shop Local Show.

Cedar Valley Selections
Cedar Valley Selections is a Lakeshore food business founded by Ameen Fadel at the age of 16 as part of a high school entrepreneurship project. The idea for Cedar Valley Selections originated from his mother Surria’s outstanding recipes, particularly her Fattoush salad dressing that was famous within her community. A family friend suggested the Fadels bottle the dressing for retail, and the business took off. Their products, which also include hummus and pita chips, are now sold in over 20 stores from Windsor to London, Ont. Their products have also recently landed in Ontario Sobeys and Metro stores.

Witch and Whimsy
Jocelyn and Joan are the energetic mother/daughter duo that started Witch and Whimsy. Both share a passion for knitting and crocheting that is shown in every artistic creation they make. They specialize in stuffy friends that are great for kids but treasured by people of all ages.
Witch and Whimsy began after a friend requested some kitty coasters, and “they remain one of our customer favourites,” Jocelyn remarked. “Now it has grown into something we never could’ve imagined.”

Jocelyn continued, “My favourite part of this business is all the good vibes that radiate from what we have created. All the laughs and smiles from our clients, all the emails and messages filled with love. The continued support from our community is what keeps us going and is why we love what we do.”  Witch and Whimsy is a must-see vendor at the Shop Local Show!

The Cheese Bar
A passion for travel and an appreciation for diverse culture and cuisine is what led Sarah Barrette to start The Cheese Bar. Sarah seeks out 100 per cent Canadian made artisanal cheese and introduces it to locals and visitors to Windsor-Essex. The Cheese Bar now has a selection of more than 60 cheeses on a regular basis and proudly carries over 10 producers from Ontario, Quebec and PEI. They also carry a small selection of imported cheese, butter, yogurt, milk, pate, cured meats and vegan cheese. Tantalize your palette and make a stop at The Cheese Bar during the Shop Local Show.

Dave’s Woodworking
This local artisan creates a variety of woodworking masterpieces. David Pettypiece focuses on rustic construction using recycled material to create unique home décor, furniture and gift items. His work includes cutting boards, wine racks, benches, tables, signage, and many more creative designs to complement your home. Visit Dave at The Shop Local Show and find the perfect holiday gift this year.

Gallup Leather
Based out of Windsor, Gallup Leather provides its customers with high-quality, hand-made leather goods using a very soft yet durable top grain leather. The artist who designs these products, Angel Anzola, has over 40 years of experience. He was born in South America and came to Canada nine years ago bringing his passion for leather and handcrafting beautiful products.

With a unique attention to detail, “our goal is to hand make long lasting leather products that carry the history of our family, into the memories of yours,” said Anzola. No animals are harmed solely for leather retail purposes, hence the leather used by Gallup is custom made from cows that are raised for food.

Rare Apparel
RARE stands for "Real Authentic. Real Etiquette." According to founders Tam Nguyen and Scott Bisson, RARE is not just apparel. It’s a lifestyle. Each design tells a story of Windsor city, and RARE’s mission is to share Windsor’s story with others.

Their concept is quite simple: Promote Windsor and the surrounding area through creative, locally designed, high-quality apparel. Through collaboration with local artists, designers, thinkers, creators, and innovators, RARE Apparel produces exceptional products that highlight the many talented and passionate people in our region.
