A Dream Designed to Come True

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

A young Windsor entrepreneur has taken her passion for design and turned it into Timber + Plumb Kitchens and Cabinetry, a boutique firm specializing in space design with custom cabinetry.

From childhood Markie Tuckett always knew she wanted to be a designer, so at a young age she worked up the courage and drive to start her own business. “It's always something I wanted to do but I was convinced that someone who was under the age of 30 couldn't pull it off,” said Tuckett. “I laugh now when I look back, age can't combat passion and drive when it comes to entrepreneurship.”

Tuckett is a graduate of the Interior Decorating program at Georgian College in Barrie, Ont. She spent the past six years building a career in kitchen and bath design before moving to Windsor and opening Timber + Plumb in May 2018. Since then, Tuckett has more than surpassed her client and project target goals.

“I believe in about a year we will need additional employees to continue to grow and become Windsor-Essex’s best boutique kitchens and cabinetry design shop,” stated Markie. “We have big plans of opening up a showroom where we can meet clients, review designs and select materials.”

Tucketts favourite part about running a business is the reaction from clients when they can see how Timber + Plumb can change their living and working environments. “It's a really good feeling when we can provide our clients with a new favourite space in their home,” said Tuckett.

A project that Tuckett is particularly proud of is the design and creation of a beautiful grilling kitchen for Forest Glade Fireplace. Stop in for a cooking class and check out the space! They are located at 11400 Tecumseh Rd. E., Windsor.

Tuckett learned a lot going through the process of starting her own business and was surprised at how much time was needed for marketing and networking. “On average I spend about three hours a day minimum thinking about how I want to market my company, who I would like to collaborate with, where my business can help people, what networking events I should attend, and so on.”

While launching her business, Tuckett participated in the WindsorEssex Small Business Centre’s Starter Company Plus program which provided her with a wealth of general knowledge around all the moving parts of a running a business. Tuckett’s advice to anyone applying for the Starter Company Plus program is to take lots of notes and consult with the people around you. “I made some good connections with people who were in the same stages of their business and it made me more comfortable with the struggles I was facing,” she said.

Of course, with every success story there are struggles one must overcome. Tuckett faced many obstacles while trying to open her business, one of the biggest being funding. “I didn't have two dimes to my name and here I am looking to quit my full-time job in Toronto to come and work in Windsor for myself with no steady pay.” However, Tuckett was able to secure funding to get her business off the ground. After working with the Small Business Centre to complete her business plan Tuckett received a $5,000 grant from Starter Company Plus and financing from Futurpreneur Canada, a non-profit organization that provides young entrepreneurs with funding and support.

According to Tuckett, the WindsorEssex Small Business Centre was there for her when she had questions, concerns or just needed a bit of mentorship. “They helped me write my business plan and provided me with free access to so many great programs that are designed to help any business.”

Tuckett added, “I'm really grateful for the guidance and leadership I received from Myrtle (Donnipad, Youth and Entrepreneurship Programs Advisor) and the rest of the team and I really look forward to working with them to help other small business owners achieve their goals and start a business.”

Tuckett hopes to accelerate her business growth and ensure her clients’ new spaces are the talk of the town. Visit or like them on Facebook at @TimberPlumb to see Tuckett’s latest projects.
