October marks the start of Small Business Month, a time to recognize the enormous contributions Windsor-Essex entrepreneurs and small business owners make towards growing our local economy and building the communities in which we shop, live and work.

According to Statistics Canada’s Canadian Business Patterns, 2016 there are over 28,000 businesses operating in Windsor-Essex which employ fewer than 10 employees. Although these business may appear small in size, they pack a big punch. When you consider how many small businesses surround you in your everyday, it is impressive to think about the amount of time, commitment and labor these hard working individuals contribute to make their businesses both come to life and stay competitive.

At the Small Business Centre, we understand that starting and running a small business involves many hours of planning, dedication, networking and hard work, and it also requires forward thinking to maintain and build upon a solid start. We also understand that fostering local and independently grown businesses has a profound impact on stimulating the local economic base, creating vibrant and desirable community districts and spurring future investment in the region.

That is why, as part of Small Business Month celebrations, we are excited to host the 3rd annual Small Biz Expo — a free public event that showcases the diversity of local and independent small business products and services from across Windsor-Essex. Area residents who love local can shop local at the expo, where they will find regional food and drink vendors, unique retail products in fashion, beauty, health, wellness, homewares, and consumer services. The evening will also provide ample networking opportunities, live demonstrations, door prizes and entertainment.

While the Small Biz Expo serves to enhance public awareness of local small businesses, it’s also a great opportunity for existing businesses owners, members of the professional community and would-be entrepreneurs to connect with one another and network to share best practices in the B2B Entrepreneur Lounge.

The Small Biz Expo takes place on Oct. 18, 2017, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Giovanni Caboto Club in Windsor, and is supported by Royal Bank of Canada, Libro Credit Union, Canada Business Ontario and Government of Ontario.
